Atticus was dressed in finer clothes than he had ever worn before. There were gold embellishments on the fabric, and jewelry on his hands and around his neck. Music was playing softly, and he looked around, trying to make sense of his surroundings. He was in a vineyard, but it was not Petreâs. There were grapes growing plump in the sunshine, while snakes hissed on the ground around his feet.
Atticus took a step back, carefully avoiding the snakes. He looked around and saw Petre and Clotho were there, holding hands and looking intently at each other. A priestess was speaking to them, and as Atticus made his way over to them, he realized they were getting married. A jolt of envy ran through him, but he smiled for his friend.
A sad voice drifted to him from behind. âAtticus.â
He turned around, and suddenly he was standing at the beach. Daphne floated in the water, just out of reach.
âDaphne!â he jumped into the water and started swimming toward her. The harder he swam, the farther away she seemed.
âWhy did you leave me behind?â she asked gloomily. Her green eyes were filled with tears.
âI didnât!â Atticus was treading water as best as he could.
âOur souls were supposed to be together forever,â she continued, her voice echoing eerily around them. Atticus turned to look behind him and realized the shore was nowhere to be seen. He was in deep waters, with no direction to swim except toward Daphne.
âThey still will be!â he insisted.
âNo.â Tears spilled over her lashes and caressed her face as gravity had their way with them. âTime is running out.â
âWhat does that mean?â Atticus asked, desperately.
Daphne shook her head and cried silently.
âTell me what that means,â Atticus called to her.
Daphneâs eyes widened, and she looked startled for a moment. Atticus felt a sharp pain on his leg as something grabbed hold of him. He was momentarily pulled under the water and he squinted, trying to make out what touched his leg. It was too dark to see, and as he broke the surface he realized Daphne was gone.
âDaphne?â he called, alarmed. âWhere are you?â
Another round of shooting pain went through his left calf, and he was pulled underwater again. He looked down and saw a giant sea serpent coming at him, jaws open wide enough to swallow him whole.
